Solar Photovoltaics (PV)

Solar PV modules produce energy from visible light rather than from solar radiation making them a great choice for Ireland. Solar PV is a great long-term sustainable renewable energy option for your home or business.

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) Ireland

Believe it or not, Solar PV performs better in Ireland than the warmer climate of the South of Germany!! Solar PV modules produce energy from visible light rather than from solar radiation making them a great choice for Ireland.

In Ireland the light level is very high and when seasonal intensity of visible light is at its peak, Ireland has very long hours of daylight to capitalise. This makes Solar PV a great long term sustainable renewable energy option for your home or business. 1kw systems installed starting from as little as €2600.

Greenhouse have entered into a partnership with BNRG Distribution & Solar Clarity who are the largest supplier of Solar PV systems in the Benelux countries. Their portfolio offers products from LG, Denim, Trina Solar & Solar Edge giving us an option for every type of installation residential or commercial. Our Renewable Showroom in Deansgrange has the product range on display. Drop in and our expertly trained team can answer all your questions.

How does Solar Photovoltaics (PV) Work?

  • A solar PV Panel is built up of 2 layers, with an electric field between them. When light shines on the cell it influences the electrical field across the layers making DC electricity.
  • The inverter converts (DC) into (AC)
  • The inverter converts the electricity from the solar panels (DC) into power (AC) that can be used by electrical loads inside your building ( TV, computer, etc).
  • In most cases solar electricity is not stored in a battery. It is used by the loads in the building or flows back to the grid when there are no loads. When there is not enough solar electricity, your building simply takes electricity from the grid.

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) FAQs

Does Solar PV need direct sunlight?

Solar PV produces its energy from light rather than solar radiation, it will still create energy even on cloudy days.

Does Shading Effect the Performance of the system?

The design of a system is critical. If one panel has shading and under performs it can determine the operating current of the full solar array. In cases where we have shading we have Inverters with an optimisation feature or “smart “ feature as its sometimes known.

What Happens if there is a power cut?

The solar PV system will simply switch off.

Do I need planning permission for a Solar PV System?

Planning Permission is only required for listed buildings or houses located in areas of “outstanding natural beauty”. No harm consulting your local council.

Do I need to inform my electricity supplier?

Yes you will need to inform your provider and If your system is over 4Kw in size (roughly 16 panels) you will need permission from your provider.
